In our woodworking classes, hands-on experience and theory are combined in courses built around the construction of high-end furniture and guitars–that you get to keep! Woodworking classes highlight the following areas of expertese: general knowledge of wood properties, tool usage, tool sharpening, joinery techniques, veneering, bowl turning, spindle turning, carving, lutherie (solid body and acoustic), furniture design and construction. In many woodworking classes, air-dried, milled lumber is used; also commonly used is a traditional method known as green woodworking where instruction begins with a freshly felled log. Our woodworking school has proven valuable to students of all abilities – professionals, amateurs and beginners. Classes at Ted Harlan's woodworking school are held all year around. For class schedules, call or email ted at 502.637.8844 or email him at ted@tedharlan.com. If you'd like to see some of the cool things past students have had the pleasure to learn to make (and take home to keep), check out the student gallery.

HARDWOOD BOX
Basic

An excellent opportunity to develop a thorough understanding of woodworking techniques while constructing a deceptively complex project. This class allows you to learn how to make jigs and fixtures, how to consctruct complex joints and how to achieve precision with both power tools and hand tools.

SPINDLE TURNING
Basic

Master the rudimentary skills of spindle turning while you build a three-legged draftsmans chair. This class will also give you the oppurtunity to hone your carving skills when you learn how to carve and sculpt your saddle. In addition, you will learn how to make a round wedged mortise and tenon joint on your leg joint and of course you'll have to learn to sharpen your tools.

BOWL TURNING
Basic

Students explore wet-wood lathe turning while they create bowls and simple vessels from newly felled logs. They will learn advanced turning and the proper techniques for a number of specialized turning tools while having the freedom to explore their own creative expression. And, of course, they get to take all of their artwork home.

EUROPEAN STYLE WORKBENCH
Intermediate

In the style of German woodworking benches that have been the standard for 400 years, students are able to learn complex construction techniques with this bench. Equiped with an end-vise, a shoulder vise and sturdy benchdogs, this bench will allow its owner the freedom to work with most any size plank safely. (use it in the garage or the kitchen)

SHAKER TABLE
Intermediate

This project teaches many popular techniques including hand-cut dovetails in the drawers, tapered leg construction, mortise and tenon joinery in the leg and rail joints and bookmatching on the top surface. You will also learn valuable finishing techniques as you get this beautiful table ready for a prime spot in your home.

DEMILUNE
Intermediate

Students will learn a lot of advanced techniques from this class. They will learn advanced lamination, wood bending, basic veneering and some tricky mortise and tenon joints on a curve while constructing an elegant and timeless piece of furniture.

ELECTRIC GUITAR
Intermediate

Electric guitars are fun. Fun to make and fun to play. We might not be able to teach you how to play it, but we can gurantee that you'll have fun building it. Students get to learn a lot about woodworking, but also a lot about the mechanics and the proper setup of an electric guitar.

ACOUSTIC GUITAR
Advanced

An acoustic guitar can be one of the most rewarding and difficult challenges for a woodcraftsman. As much a study in acoustical engineering as it is an exercise in fine crafstmanship, we teach lutherie the old fashioned way–tapping, testing and tuning through every step. If you want to be thoroughly challenged and equally rewarded, this is the class for you.
